About this age calculator

Age sounds like a single number but most official paperwork wants it broken down into years, months and days. Visa applications, school admissions, retirement calculations and insurance forms all expect the precise breakdown rather than just "32 years old".

The calculator handles the calendar arithmetic correctly, including leap years and varying month lengths. Subtract two dates and the math gets surprisingly fiddly — what is "5 years 6 months" when the start date is the 31st of a month and the end date is the 30th? The calculator follows the standard convention of completing months only when the day-of-month is reached or exceeded.

For curiosity, the same date breakdown shows the total weeks, days, hours and minutes you have been alive. These bigger numbers can be motivating: a 35-year-old has lived around 1,800 weeks and has perhaps another 2,000 weeks ahead at typical life expectancy — surprisingly finite when laid out.

How to use it

  1. Enter your date of birth.
  2. Optionally change the "calculate up to" date — defaults to today.
  3. Read the breakdown across years/months/days plus the total in smaller units.

Tips & notes

  • For age-eligibility paperwork (driving, voting, retirement), use the calculator to confirm the exact date you become eligible.
  • For pet age in "human years", look up species-specific charts — the 1:7 ratio for dogs is a myth.
  • For age difference between two people, run the calculator twice with the same target date and subtract.

Frequently asked questions

How does the calculator handle leap years?

Correctly. The day count uses real calendar arithmetic, including the extra day in February of leap years.

What if my birthday is on February 29?

On non-leap years, the convention used here treats March 1 as the "birthday" for full-year counting. You officially become a year older on March 1 in those years.

Can I calculate age difference between two specific dates?

Yes — set "date of birth" to the earlier date and "calculate up to" to the later date. The result is the difference between them.
