About this ideal weight calculator

There is no single "ideal weight" number that is right for everyone. Different formulas were designed for different purposes — Devine (1974) and Robinson (1983) were originally built for medication dosing, while the BMI-based range comes from population health data. Each one gives a slightly different answer for the same height, which is itself a useful lesson: ideal weight is a range, not a point.

The Devine formula was the first widely used ideal body weight equation and remains popular in clinical pharmacy. It says: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet for men, 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet for women. Robinson updated it in the 1980s with slightly different constants. Neither was designed to be a health target — they were designed to estimate lean body mass for safe drug dosing.

The BMI-based range (BMI 18.5 to 24.9 multiplied by height squared) is the most modern and the one most clinicians refer to when discussing healthy weight ranges. It gives a window rather than a single number, which is closer to how human bodies actually work. Use the spread between the three numbers as a guide rather than a target.

How to use it

  1. Pick your sex — the older formulas use sex-specific constants.
  2. Enter your height in centimetres.
  3. Compare the three results: the BMI range is the widest and most current.
  4. Anywhere inside the BMI range is generally considered healthy.

Tips & notes

  • If you sit slightly above the BMI range but feel good and have a healthy waist-to-height ratio, the number is not an emergency. Body composition matters more than the scale.
  • Pregnant women, body builders, growing teenagers and adults over 65 should not aim for these numbers without clinical guidance.
  • A 5 kg range is normal. Targeting a single number to the gram leads to anxiety, not health.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula should I trust?

For everyday health, the BMI-based range. The Devine and Robinson numbers are useful in clinical pharmacy but were never designed as patient-facing health targets.

Why are the men's and women's numbers different?

Body composition differs on average — women carry more essential fat (for hormonal function and reproduction) while men typically carry more muscle. Older formulas baked that difference into their constants.

I am an athlete and the calculator says I am overweight. Should I worry?

Probably not. Like BMI, these formulas treat all mass as equivalent. If your body fat is low and your training is going well, the number is misleading. Stick with body fat percentage as your gauge.
