A personal carbon footprint is rough by nature — every calculation depends on assumptions about your local electricity grid, the model of your car, what your food actually contains. But the order of magnitude is reliable enough that you can see which slices of your life dominate and target changes that actually move the needle.
For most adults in developed countries, the four big contributors are transport (especially flights and car miles), home energy (heating, cooling, appliances), diet (especially red meat and dairy), and consumption (electronics, clothing, things bought new). Smaller categories — water use, paper, recycling — add up but are dwarfed by the big four.
The calculator uses standard emissions factors for car driving, short-haul flights, electricity and diet. The output is your annual personal total in tonnes.
The global average is about 4.7 t CO₂ per person per year. The climate-stable target is roughly 2 t. Wealthy countries average 8–15 t per person.
Offsets are useful but a complement to reduction, not a replacement. Trustworthy offsets are hard to find — look for Gold Standard or Verified Carbon Standard certifications and treat the offset as a backup, not a licence.
They are order-of-magnitude estimates. The exact number depends on your local grid, your car model, your diet composition and many other variables. The breakdown by slice is more reliable than the absolute total.
