About this leave calculator

HR teams and self-employed contractors both need this constantly: how many billable working days fall between two dates, after subtracting weekends and public holidays. The calculator handles all three automatically.

Weekends are configurable — many countries use Saturday and Sunday, but the Middle East historically uses Friday and Saturday, and some industries treat Sunday and Monday as off-days. Tick whichever days are non-working for your situation.

Holidays are added as a comma- or newline-separated list of dates. Any date you list is excluded from the working-day count, even if it falls on a weekday. This handles public holidays, company holidays, planned shutdowns and any custom non-working days.

How to use it

  1. Enter the start and end dates of the period.
  2. Tick which days count as weekend (defaults to Saturday and Sunday).
  3. Paste a list of holiday dates (YYYY-MM-DD format).
  4. Read the working day count, weekend count, holiday count and total.

Tips & notes

  • For annual leave calculations, paste your country full year of public holidays once and save the result.
  • For invoicing, working days are the most defensible billing metric — fewer disputes about effort vs calendar time.
  • Multi-region teams should agree on which holiday calendar applies to a project before counting.

Frequently asked questions

Why count working days separately from total days?

Because for most leave, salary and billing purposes, weekends and holidays are not "work days". The distinction matters for legal leave entitlements, project planning and contractor invoices.

What date format should I use for holidays?

YYYY-MM-DD (ISO format), one per line or separated by commas. The calculator ignores anything that does not parse.

Does it include the start and end dates?

Yes — both the start date and end date are included in the count if they fall on working days.
