Image compression is the single biggest speed improvement most websites can make. Photos straight from a phone or camera are typically 2–5 MB. Compressed to 200–400 KB, they look identical on screen but load 10× faster. For mobile users on slower connections, that is the difference between a usable site and an abandoned one.
The compressor uses the browser built-in JPEG encoder, with a quality slider that trades file size against visual quality. At 70% quality, the file is usually 60–80% smaller than the original with no visible loss. At 50%, you start seeing slight artifacts in detailed areas. Below that, the savings stop being worth it.
For PNGs of photographs, converting to JPG via the PNG-to-JPG converter is usually a better starting point — PNG is not designed for photographic compression and the savings from compression alone are limited.
