Barcodes encode short strings (typically a product code, ID number or ticket reference) as a sequence of black and white bars that can be scanned by hardware. Code 128 is the most common general-purpose barcode standard — it encodes all 128 ASCII characters and is supported by virtually every barcode scanner on the market.
The generator produces clean SVG barcodes that you can print at any size without quality loss. For label printing, copy the SVG into a label design tool (Word, Illustrator, Avery Designer) and lay it out at the size your printer and labels need.
For retail-grade EAN-13 or UPC barcodes (the 13-digit codes on supermarket products), you need a registered prefix from GS1 and validation rules this tool does not enforce. For internal product codes, inventory tracking, ticket stubs and general-purpose use, Code 128 from this tool is fine.
Most scanners read Code 128 fine, including retail scanners — they just will not look up the code against any product database. For supermarket-style scanning that actually looks up the product, you need a registered EAN-13 from GS1.
Code 128 prints reliably at 2 cm wide and up. Smaller barcodes need higher print resolution to scan reliably.
All printable ASCII characters (letters, digits, common punctuation). Non-ASCII (emoji, accented characters) is not supported by Code 128.
